Ontario, Canada: A leader in waste management

With The Refinishing Touch’s recent expansion into the Canadian market, we are always interested in hearing the latest news, statistics and trends relating to sustainability in the Maple Leaf country.

The latest Canadian organization to capture national attention is The Ontario Tire Stewardship (OTS), who recently announced the recycling of its 50 millionth tire – an impressive milestone reached in less than four years. If that doesn’t sound like much, imagine the some 50 million tires laid side-by-side – the span would circle Canada not once, but twice, and weigh more than nine Titanic ships.

OTS’ innovative Used Tires Program aims to collect 100 percent of the 12 million tires that enter Ontario annually. Once tires have been dropped off at one of the registered donation locations, OTS repurposes the rubber to create innovative green products, such as playground structures and door mats.

Here at The Refinishing Touch, our own mission is strikingly similar to that of OTS. As a company with over 35 years’ worth of experience in refinishing, re-upholstering and repurposing furniture assets for public and private organizations, we too are dedicated to waste management.

By up-cycling outdated or worn furniture, and avoiding the costly and environmentally-damaging option of buying brand new assets, organizations can assist with minimizing landfill waste, reducing carbon emissions, preserving trees, and protecting clean air and water – benefits much similar to tire recycling.
